The Toshiba hard drive to the left is nestled in a lightweight Toshiba business laptop, in rubber shock mounting. The shock on opening up the hard drive bay by removing a single screw from the bottom of the laptop was to find that the drive isn't secured at all. It just sits tightly in the rubber shock mountings located at the corners of the bay (they show up as black rubber), and pops out if you pull up on the transparent plastic tab. Because the object of shock mounting is to isolate the drive from the rest of the laptop, should it be dropped or hit, even the connector has to float. In normal laptop mounting, the male pins on the drive fit right into a female connector that's attached to the laptop structure or motherboard, and provides some of the mounting strength. For the shock protected drive, the connector is attached by flexible wires.

The picture to the right shows the standard IDE interface on a 2.5" laptop hard drive. If you open up your laptop, remove the hard drive, and find that there's a female connector on the drive, it's almost certainly a removable gender changer. Some new laptops feature SATA hard drives, the serial version of ATA or IDE drives. It makes no difference to the user, unless it's a higher performance version, but the connector is smaller since it uses a serial rather than a parallel bus. Laptop hard drives are amazingly rugged little things, they often get noisier as they age, but a noisy hard drive may run for five years without failing.

The worst thing that can happen to most laptop users, aside from the loss of the whole laptop, is hard drive failure. The hard drive holds all of your data, files, and all your e-mails and contacts if you use Outlook, Eudora, or any other non-portal based e-mail. But I'm sure many more laptops have gone to the recycling facility with live hard drives than dead hard drives. If you have any files you value on your hard drive that aren't backed up, you should invest $10 or $15 in a USB shell and attempt to recover the data. Hard drive data recovery is thought to be an arcane art, requiring expensive equipment and a high level of technical skill, but all of that only comes into play if the onboard electronics or the motor have failed. In that case, the drive platters are removed from the metal case in a special clean room, and the data is recovered by reading it off on a universal reader.

Most laptop owners are still very foggy as to where their data resides and consider the whole lower part of the laptop (everything except the screen) to be part and parcel with the hard drive. In reality, laptop hard drive are 2.5" wide, about 4" long and about a quarter inch thick. You can see to the right that the drive cage is held from lifting by two metal tabs, and that the screw that held the plastic lid on the drive bay went all the way through and secured the cage in the laptop. That's all that held it together, one screw, and it's a typical arrangement. It turns out that removing the old hard drive from the cage, once it's out, is generally a bigger job than removing the cage from the laptop, because there are four screws involved and they are often overtightened and strip when you try to remove them. But it's not necessary to take it apart any further if all you want to to recover your old files.

To the left, I'm holding the new USB 2.0 interface that came with the $14.95 Sabrent hard drive enclosure I bought from itsbattery.com for $14.95. The interface is really all you need to gain access to the old hard drive, if it's healthy, and recover your data. The kit comes with software from Mac users as well as Windows based machines, but modern operating system versions don't even require the software. They'll just find the new USB hardware when it's plugged in, recognize that it's a hard drive, and allow you to recover your files as long as the file system types were compatible. I'm holding the interface card over the aluminum enclosure in which you could install the drive if you wanted to use it as a permanent external hard drive.

But when I started taking the screws out of the cage, three out of four fought me and the fourth stripped, despite the fact I was using a high quality screw driver. It would be easy to bend and break the remaining tab off to remove the cage, but why bother, when the only point of the job is to recover some old files? So I plugged the interface on (to the right), then set the whole thing down on my table with the new laptop and plugged it into the USB 2.0 port. You can see that the little green LED on the drive is lit and active, if you have good eyes and a better imagination.

Immediately after plugging in the USB cable, Windows XP picked up on the drive, and asks what you want to do with it. Choose "View with Explorer" and you'll gain access to all of the old folders, drag them onto your new laptop hard drive, and your data recover job is complete. Well, after you burn the recovered files on a DVD it will be complete, and you won't face the worry again. If the LED doesn't light up, you could be plugging the USB into an old port that doesn't source the 500 mA required, or the interface could be bad out of the box, or the drive could really be dead. If you don't hear the drive spin up, you can try picking it up gently, a few inches over the table, and try rocking in slowly to see if you can feel the centripetal force of the disk spinning.

In the 2005/2006 time frame, laptops started changing over from the older IDE (PATA) hard drives to the newer SATA hard drive. The only difference, as far as the user is concerned, is that the SATA drives are faster and have a different connector. The drives are otherwise identical, and the SATA drives often cost less in the larger capacities as they are more common today. Since the SATA interface only requires a few wires (serial vs. parallel bus), ribbon cables aren't required and a more flexible and robust connection is possible. The picture to the right shows an SATA drive installed in the laptop bay, and thanks to the rubberized shock mounting around the bay and on the cover, it simply sits tightly in place - no screws required. I only needed to remove one screw to take this drive out and put it into an SATA USB enclosure, and that was the screw on the drive bay lid.

Mounting the SATA drive on the circuit card for the external USB enclosure involves sliding the SATA edge connector into the circuit board connector and putting in a couple screws to hold it, if you're going to make the enclosure its permanent home. But don't make the mistake of thinking you're going to be able to boot your laptop from an external SATA hard drive, I haven't come across the laptop BIOS that can handle it yet. When the laptop BIOS gives you a "USB boot" option, it's the option to boot from a memory stick. Sabrent makes an SATA hard drive shell which costs $22.95 from itsbattery.com. In any case, if your laptop is a brick and you need to recover your data, pulling out the hard drive and putting it in an external USB case is usually the easiest approach, providing that the hard drive itself isn't fried.

Are all Fujitsu notebook PC's affected?

No, because not all batteries used in Fujitsu notebook PC's are affected. Only those models which were sold with a battery sold to Fujitsu by Sony, and of those only a smaller group which had batteries made by Sony during particular date ranges, are affected.

Laptop Testing for Backlight or Inverter Failure

I've been looking for an easy way to test for live laptop inverters for a couple years and I finally found a cheap, non-invasive method. The funny thing is I'd just ordered up a couple PC modding CCFL lamps with inverters to do a page about testing inverters with cheap replacement lamps. I'm not sure that would have worked given the impedance differences and the way inverters have to go through a timed sequence of voltage ramp up and down to strike and hold the plasma. Since the impedance drops when the tube lights and the plasma conducts, it's quite a bit more complicated than simply providing an RF power source. But as I was taking apart my old Toshiba screen today to expose the inverter leads for testing, it occurred to me to try the new Cen-Tech meter I picked up at Harbor Freight a couple weeks ago for $20. To the right I'm showing the zero (well, 10Hz is well within 1% of zero on a 20KHz scale) reading with no power to the inverter.

Inverters put out fairly high voltage, in the 500 V to 700 V range, and a very low radio frequency, between 35 KHz and 60 KHz on data sheets I've looked up. That's something you could easily pick up with a spectrum analyzer and a probe for either the electric or magnet field component, but the last spectrum analyzer I worked with cost around $30,000, so it's a bit out of the reach of the home consumer. Now, the neat thing about the Cen-Tech meter is it comes with a Hz measurement. It's limited to 20 KHz, after which the display will simply show a "1" for over scale. Rather than equipping the meter with a special probe, I just held the two standard probes a fraction of an inch apart, and the son-of-a-gun picked up the cyclic field for the live screen almost an inch away from the inverter output, as shown to the left.

The weak signal results in a lower than reality frequency reading, and as I moved the probes close to the inverter output, it simply went off scale. I'd try to be more technical, but the instructions that came with the meter were so vague about its capabilities and what it's supposed to read that I'm just assuming here. The important thing is that the inverter test worked, and at no point am I touching the probes to exposed wires or terminals. This beats the heck out of a test I saw a guy recommending where he sets a multimeter to high voltage and shorts out the live inverter. He reported he could get a transient reading before the inverter shut itself down, and with luck, it would still work after rebooting a few times. The inverter is designed for an RF impedance, not to drive into a simple DC resistive load like a multimeter, and I wouldn't be surprised if that voltage test has ruined more than a few inverters.

With my cyclic field test, I don't see how it can do any damage, unless you're careless with the probes and short out something in the screen. Then it occurred to me that the test could be truly non-invasive since laptop screens are so thin. To the left, I'm showing my newer Toshiba which I normally run plugged into a 19" Samsung monitor so I can see what I'm typing. A little hunting around on the outside with the spread probes and the meter picked up the field to the left. A further small move and to the lower left, you see the "1" indicating the field is off scale, higher than the 20KHz maximum frequency the meter can handle. Below, just as a proof, I'm holding the probes in the same spot with the laptop live, but the image diverted to the Samsung. Hunted around forever, no reading. So, this is probably the best use I've gotten from that MSEE I earned in the RF/Radar concentration 16 years ago!

Of course, into every test procedure some rain must fall, and when I went out and tested some other random laptops, as well as a simple CCFL tube and inverter for modding, my $20 meter failed to register anything! So I borrowed a better meter from my neighbor, a Fluke 110 true RMS meter. The Fluke specs show it's rated to 50KHz, which turned out to be critical in the inverter test application. As the measurment to the right shows, the Toshiba I'd originally tested has an inverter frequency of around 33 KHz. The reading varies a little with the exact positioning of the probes, the air gap, and the noise on the leads, but something in the sub 40 KHz was clear. That's why my cheap meter that is spec'd to 20 KHz was able to pick up the field, even though it was over range, it was still within an octave. But higher frequencies are just filtered out or unmeasurable.

When I tested a Dell sub-notebook and my neighbors industrial rated laptop, I couldn't pick up anything on my meter. Using his Fluke, you can see that the inverter frequency was picked up as nearly 68 KHz. By this point, I'd taken to using a piece of paper to make-up the air gap, rather than trying to hold the probes apart. So I'm guessing the Fluke, which sells for a little less than $100 in the aftermarket, will cover all laptop inverter testing applications. The model 110 has been replaced by the model 115 which goes for around $110 new. If I have some time I'll design a little probe to function as an antenna, rather than just using the test probes, which involves a lot of fiddling around.

Of course, there are numerous things that can go wrong with laptop displays, so try to jump into testing the inverter before trying the obvious solutions. The first step, assuming you have power, etc, is to just plug in an external monitor and see if you can get that lit up. Newer laptops will usually autosense the presence of an analog monitor and shift the display without you having to use the function key (Fn-F5 on my Toshiba). If the external monitor works, you know that your video processor is good, that the laptop is booting into the OS, that the only problem is you can't see the screen. Wiring harness problems are common with laptop LCD failures because the screen is a moving part. The cables may fail in the hinge, or the constant movement and lid flexing may cause the signal connector to work loose of the LCD screen. It's also possible for the video connector to lift off the motherboard, especially if you're a heavy typer:-) When the external screen works, the cabling all appears good, and a very faint image is apparent on the laptop screen, you know that the backlight isn't lighting up. Not only is inverter failure more common than backlight (CCFL lamp) failure, but inverters are easier to replace. And now that it's winter, keep in mind that temperature has an affect on the voltage required to get the backlight to strike, so if the laptop has been sitting in a freezing car for a while and the screen doesn't light up, don't rush to take it apart. Give it a couple hours to warm up, but don't do anything whacky like sticking it in an oven or on a radiator!

The first laptop I ever owned was a Toshiba CDT1625 and the battery was down to 20 minutes life after about a month. I yelled about it at Toshiba until they sent me a new laptop battery, which was stone dead within a few weeks. Laptop batteries such as Toshiba PA3191U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3166U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3331U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3098U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3084U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3395U-1BRS Battery and Toshiba PA3250U-1BRS Battery from some manufacturers have notoriously short lifespans (not mentioning any names here:-), and the Ni-MH (Nickel Metal Hydride Battery) which replaced NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) in most applications just aren't that much better. So, I thought I'd crack open the stone dead battery back and see if it could be rebuilt. The first thing I learned is that laptop battery packs aren't built to be rebuilt, they GLUE the things closed. Took some serious prying to get the thing battery pack open, but definitely in reusable condition.

Most newer batteries can't be easily repaired, but I find Amazon has such cheap prices for replacements that it doesn't matter. There isn't a whole lot to an old laptop battery, just a hard plastic shell, enough individual cells to make up the required voltage, and a thermocouple. The black wire scotch-taped between two battery cells is the thermocouple, and it's positioned to measure the air temperature in the battery pack, not the actual battery surface temperature. Maybe that's why the batteries fail so fast. The only other component in the battery pack is the little circuit board (below), which has nothing on it but the contacts for the notebook DC circuitry. Looking at it from the outside, you would have thought there was some fancy charging circuit inside, not so. When you buy a replacement laptop battery, you're just getting a new set of cells to run down.

The individual cells that make up the laptop battery are simply strapped together with little contact strips which are soldered in place (below). To repair a laptop battery, you need to replace all the cells and resolder, but here's the problem. I searched around for a price on the cells, Sanyo HR-4/3AU, and the best price I could find was over $5. With nine 1.2V cells required to make up the 10.8V battery, I'd need to spend around $50 to replace the cells and have a replacement battery. On the other hand, I can buy a new Toshiba laptop battery for $69.99 without even shopping around, that's the first one that came up in Google. To cost effectively repair a laptop battery, you'd either need to find the replacement cells wholesale, or be doing it for a laptop whose battery is just ridiculously overpriced to start with. Live and learn.

So, how to say what's required in a laptop today for the average user? For starters, you have to decide whether or not battery life is important to you. I don't care much about battery life with notebooks because I don't want to be working anywhere I can't actually plug in. Would you really take your laptop to the beach? If you do, go at night because you'll never see the screen for the glare. Battery(Toshiba Laptop Battery) life is a function of several things, including: model, backlight and options. I recently bought a Lenovo ThinkPad with LED back lighting that helps it achieve a six hour battery life if you crank the screen brightness down low and use the glow-in-the-dark keyboard sparingly. Cost $679 and was pretty loaded, with a 500 GB hard drive, Core 3 processor, etc. Some models have notoriously bad battery life, certainly the two older Toshiba Satellite's I've owned have both been horrible, but since I don't really care about sitting around outdoor cafes (and indoor cafes have wall sockets), I don't even consider this. There's also the option of buying a longer life or additional battery for many notebook models. Keep in mind that following this advice will turn your lightweight 4 pounder into a heavyweight 8 pounder, but battery life is always a question of compromise. Think hard about whether or not you really need to use your laptop in places where you can't easily plug in, and if that's the case, put battery life at the top of your list when you read reviews. BTW, the batteries such as Toshiba PA2487U Battery, Toshiba PA3107U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3383U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3384U-1BRS Battery and Toshiba PA3285U-1BRS Battery in my latest Toshiba have been working as promised for a couple years now, I usually get 3+ hours of life. The next issue for most people is screen size. In my estimation, smaller screen sizes are actually better for working on, but unfortunately, cheap laptops tend to come with larger screen sizes. That may sound counter intuitive, but the only point of a large screen on a laptop is for watching DVD movies, and I don't watch movies. However, what happens with a large screen is at normal sizes the text stretches a little too much and the letters lose blackness and sharpness. My last notebook had a 15.5" screen and I almost took it back before I got used to the way the screen looked. After a year, I gave it away and bought a lightweight with a 12" screen. Netbooks come with small screens, usually 10" or less, but they aren't true laptops, lacking features like a DVD drive and a full size keyboard for typing. For me, a good screen size is around 12", though some high end mini-laptops have 10" screens. 17" screens are just gross, makes it difficult to carry the thing around, they won't even fit in standard laptop shoulder bags.

Connectivity is the most important technical issue for most people. Another bit of advice is don't buy a laptop that requires add in cards. Nobody really uses the add-in cards anymore, whether PC cards or PCMCIA or any other alphabet soup, they all suffer from fragile connectors. Not the card edge within the laptop, that works fine, it's the external connector for the modem, network, antenna, etc, that will be a lifelong headache. That's why I was so set on getting internal 802.11G wireless connectivity in my current notebook when it was new, but the truth is, those USB wireless adapter are pretty bullet-proof, unlike the add-in cards. However, the standard cheap laptop today should be equipped with an internal V.92 modem (RJ-11 jack) and either a 100BaseT or Gigabit wired ethernet port (RJ-45) jack. A firewire port is also pretty common these days for an external hard drive and some audio/visual stuff, but if you're that interested in high-end peripherals, you should probably be looking at a more expensive notebook.

USB 2.0 actually solves just about all peripheral connection issues, though old notebooks will have a mix of USB ports, like 1 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 1.1. I wouldn't buy a netbook without a USB 2.0 port unless you are absolutely sure you'll never be connecting any high speed peripherals, such as drives, color printers, scanners, or large Jump Drives. The truth is that most of these devices will work on a USB 1.1 port, but at about 5% the speed (20 times slower). You really don't need a parallel port on a new laptop since most printers are manufactured with at least a USB option, and if you get a real deal on a laptop, it'll be less likely to sport legacy connectors.

When it comes to RAM, you want a minimum of 2 GB for Windows 7, and many new laptops come with 3 GB or 4G B. As for the standard capacities, my advice is to settle for whatever fits your price tag, no kidding. All laptops come with a DVD recorder unless they are super-lightweight business notebooks or super cheap netbooks. I never used to understand why anybody would want to record DVDs on a laptop, but now that I've gone years without a desktop computer, it makes perfect sense. Internal hard drives are all too large to be fully utilized by the vast majority of users, unless you have a huge iTunes collection to back-up or plan to be dumping digital video to your hard drive all the time. If it's video editing you're after, you really need a higher end machine because a cheap notebook won't be poweful. A small hard drive these days is 250 GB, which is at least eight the storage I've used so far in my entire life.

I've bought several new laptops in the last five years, and when possible, I bought them on sale with store and manufacturer rebates. The laptop I'm writing this article on is a Toshiba Satellite U205 that I paid around $1300 for, for my business. Today, the equivalent laptop (but several years more advanced) costs around $650. I made photocopies of all the paperwork, followed the rebate instructions to the letter, and put the copies with my bills where I'll be constantly reminded until they show up. If the rebate checks don't come in within a couple months, I'll go complain at the store, but what happens more often is you get a letter from the rebate processor claiming that something was missing. Update! Got the money already, just around 4 weeks. This would have been a waste of time in the old days, but in early March, the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) got involved, extracting an agreement from CompUSA that they would stand behind rebate offers from third parties on merchandise they advertise at cheap prices due to manufacturers rebates. I'm pretty comfortable with both Best Buy and Toshiba, so I don't expect any problems, but it pays to be ready.

So how can you find which new laptops are available with significant rebates? My first stop in shopping for retail electronics is always www.itsbattery.com. They list all of the laptop deals from the big electronics retailers in every state in the country. I think they basically have the same information that appears in the Sunday sales circular if you buy a big city paper, but they have it all in one place where you can see the items side by side. I like buying laptops from chains with local outlets so if I get home and there's something missing from the box, I can go right back and return it. The problem with mail order is that if something shows up broken, you may get stuck arguing with the shipper rather than the vendor. That said, you can always search on Google for "closeout laptops" and you'll find plenty of places that will sell you a cheap laptop by mail order. However, I've spent some time looking at these offers, and even when they are totally legitimate deals from decent vendors that I recognize, the prices just aren't that good. The problem is that the biggest savings tend to be on the most expensive models, so you don't end up with a cheap prices, you end up saving $500 and still paying $1200. I'd also stay away from refurbished laptops unless the price is incredibly compelling, and it usually isn't. Refurbished laptops have limited warranties, normally 90 days, and my gut feeling is that when it comes to notebook computers, once a lemon, always a lemon.

If you buy a laptop in a store, watch out for pushy salesmen. I almost clocked a kid at Best Buy for trying to alpha-dog me into buying a subscription for virus software. I had no interest in playing their game, with the endless, "Sir, I just like to know what virus software you plan to run." The fact that they don't know when to shut up and leave it alone tells me that they are trained to be jerks. Imagine telling a salesperson you just want to pay and leave and to have them continue trying to play sales games. I suspect it's the last time I'll be visiting Best Buy for anything - the formula seems to be, Best Buy, Worst Checkout.

At this point, then, the touch-screen is basically a fun and somewhat frivolous option - adding about $100 to the sticker price -- that adds some sizzle to an otherwise solid but unspectacular laptop. The Satellite Pro U500-EZ1311 is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo T6670 chip and on-board graphics. Three gigabytes or RAM is standard, and it can hold up to 8 GB. There's also a 250 GB hard drive and a DVD burner.

The keyboard is basic but very usable, with no unpleasant surprises. The standard touchpad felt wonderful, however, with a textured surface for positive control a lighted strip that indicates whether it's turned on. Unfortunately, the multi-touch gesture control sometimes misinterpreted my cursor movements as attempts at making control gestures. I didn't accidentally do anything harmful, but I occasionally found myself having to attempt simple cursor movements more than once.

A strip of lighted buttons above the keyboard make it easy to control sound volume and media playback. There's even an Eco Mode button that cuts energy usage. Those buttons are flanked by surprisingly good-sounding, top-firing stereo speakers, and there's also a built-in Web cam and microphone. But if you're hoping the touch screen will somehow change the way you work on your laptop and magically make computing more productive, you're likely to be disappointed. For now, based on this sample of one, touch-screen laptops remain interesting, not-too-expensive curiosities, not game changers.

When I first wrote about Toshiba's new Satellite Pro U500-EZ1311, I was intrigued by the laptop's built-in touch screen. Touch technology is hot right now, and it seemed adventuresome to put a touch-screen display on an everyday laptop computer. The only problem was that I wasn't sure exactly what SMBs -- or anyone else -- would actually use the laptop's touch screen for.

After a couple weeks of living with the machine, I'm still not sure of the answer to that question.

That doesn't mean I didn't like the $999 Satellite Pro U500-EZ1311. In fact, it's a solid machine with good usability and plenty of interesting features, which I will detail in a moment. But after the first few days of obsessively testing and playing with the touch screen capability, I found that I hardly ever touched the screen.

Touch And Go? OK, so that sounds like a bad pun, but it's actually an accurate assessment of the situation. While you can use the touch screen for just about anything you can do with the touchpad or a mouse, in most cases it's harder, not easier, to accomplish tasks that way. At first, I was worried that touching the 13.3-inch screen would push the laptop include the Toshiba Laptop Battery such as Toshiba PA2487U Battery, Toshiba PA3107U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3383U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3384U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3285U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3191U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3166U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3331U-1BRS Battery and Toshiba PA3098U-1BRS Battery over onto its back like a stranded turtle. The slick hinges that drop the screen below the level of the unit's base also added to the U500's overall stability. I also worried about smudging the screen with greasy fingers, but that didn't seem to be a problem either.

But I did find it hard to hit the precise point I was aiming for, sometimes having to tap the screen two or three times to get just the right spot. The tiny pointer that indicates touch-screen cursor position doesn't show up until you actually touch the screen, so it can be kind of tough to tell exactly where your fingertip will land -- especially when trying to minimize windows, for example. And touching the wrong spot can have serious unintended consequences that can't always be solved by the Back button.

I did like the touch screen's ability to automatically "grab" a window when touching its top bar, making it relatively easy to reposition windows on the screen without having to hold down a mouse button, for example. But even after weeks of use, I still found myself reaching for the touch pad or the mouse - not the touch screen - when I wanted to move things around on the screen.

I also liked the multi-touch screen's ability to use two-finger gestures to resize windows on the screen (sort of like on an iPhone), which I found particularly useful for zooming in on large pictures using image viewers such as IrfanView. Similarly, the gestures made it easy to resize text in word processing programs like Microsoft Word. But even after weeks of living with the U500, I still had to remind myself that those options were available in addition to the standard mouse and trackpad.

Touch-Enabled Apps Toshiba includes a couple of touch-enabled applications with the U500 that are designed to take advantage of the capability. Toshiba ReelTime and Toshiba Bulletin Board. I tried them, and found that while they're useful for checking out how the touch screen works they're hardly world-class advertisements for touch screens. Besides, both apps work almost as well using traditional input methods instead of touch.

The touch-screen capabilities also have limits on what they can do compared to a mouse or touchpad. You can't slide your finger down to the bottom of the screen to reveal a hidden Windows 7 task bar, for example. And the touch-screen software kept trying to launch the touch-screen soft keyboard, despite the fact that the U500 has a built in physical keyboard. I can't think of any reason anyone would want to use that virtual keyboard on a regular laptop. (Apparently, Windows 7 doesn't know the difference between a tablet and a regular laptop.)

Fujitsu Battery Exchange Program

Fujitsu is voluntarily participating in a battery recall program announced by Sony Corporation and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on October 23, 2006, under which all affected users will receive replacement batteries and the affected batteries must be returned to Fujitsu, all at Fujitsu's expense. Some of the Sony-supplied batteries used in Fujitsu notebook computers manufactured between June 2005 and October 2006 that were sold in the United States qualify for the program, and additionally Fujitsu will replace certain affected batteries that may have been sold in Canada. Collectively, the replacement of affected batteries in the United States and Canada is called the Fujitsu Battery Exchange Program.

The covered Sony batteries were sold with several Fujitsu LifeBook® notebook computer models, and were also sold as separate accessories. Fujitsu will replace designated batteries with new batteries, free of charge and including all shipping and handling, whether or not they have actually failed.

The issue is confined to the battery itself, and is not related to the computer that uses the battery. Therefore, this program will only replace the potentially affected batteries such as Fujitsu FPCBP80 Battery, Fujitsu FPCBP77 Battery, Fujitsu FPCBP68 Battery, Fujitsu FPCBP63 Battery and Fujitsu FPCBP95 Battery, not the computers in which the batteries came or were installed.

If your LifeBook computer has an affected battery Fujitsu advises that you use your computer only with the battery pack removed. Shut down your computer, disconnect the AC adapter, and then remove the battery pack. Connect the AC adapter again to use your computer on AC power.

If you choose, contrary to the advice of Fujitsu, to continue to use your LifeBook with an affected Sony battery while waiting for a replacement, you can reduce risk by taking the following precautions:

Do not use the LifeBook simultaneously on Fujitsu Laptop Battery power with the AC adapter; disconnect the AC adapter from the computer if using battery power.

Operate the computer only on a flat surface, and never on surfaces which retain heat (such as towels, blankets, clothing) or heated surfaces

Cease using battery power if temperature exceeds usual heat levels

Remove the battery at all other times

Once you receive and install your replacement battery, you may resume normal use of your LifeBook.

After recently debuting in Japan, Toshiba is now selling its dual-screen laptop/tablet in the U.S., the company said Monday.

As previously reported, the Libretto W105 (marketed as the W100 in Japan) is a small, 1.8-pound, 7-inch Windows 7 clamshell device that sports two capacitive LCD screens: one for viewing, and one for typing. The typing screen is much like the virtual keyboard on the Apple iPad. The W105 can also function as a dual-screen tablet.

As of Monday, the W105 is available in the U.S. via preorders at ToshibaDirect.com. It will also be available at select retail stores on Sunday, August 29, for $1,099.99, the company said.

U.S. specs are slightly different from the model in Japan, a Toshiba spokesman said. The U.S. model will only come with one battery--the larger 8-cell battery--bumping the device's weight up to 1.8 pounds compared with the 1.5-pound weight of the model with the smaller battery in Japan. Sony to launch notebook battery recall

Batteries that shipped with laptops sold by Fujitsu, Gateway, Sony and Toshiba comprise this recall, the CPSC said. Sony is expected to make its own official announcement at a Tuesday press conference in Japan, CPSC said in a statement. The worldwide tally of potentially defective batteries used in laptops made by these four PC makers is more than 3 million, the CPSC said.

The U.S. commission's decision to recall the batteries is based on 16 previous reports of notebook batteries overheating, causing minor property damage and two minor burns, the statement says. It cautions that there have been no reported incidents involving batteries sold by Fujitsu, Gateway, Sony or Toshiba.

The CPSC determined, in conjunction with Sony, that the battery recall is limited to notebook computers and does not affect other electronic devices with batteries made by Sony, said Julie Vallese, the CPSC's director of information and public affairs.

The announcement put Gateway in the recall spotlight for the first time since August, when reports of battery defects first surfaced. Notified two weeks ago by Sony, Gateway decided to issue a voluntary recall of the batteries such as Sony PCGA-BP71 battery, Sony VGP-BPL2 battery, Sony VGP-BPS2 battery, Sony VGP-BPS3 battery, Sony VGP-BPS5 battery, Sony VGP-BPS8 battery, Sony VGP-BPS9 battery, Sony PCG-R505 battery, Sony PCG-V505 battery and Sony PCG-Z505 battery contained in 18 of its notebook models, said Lisa Emard, director of media relations for Gateway.

"We have not seen any of the types of issues they've described in these batteries in our systems," she said.

Gateway announced on Monday a recall of 35,000 lithium-ion batteries made by Sony. The notebooks affected by the recall were shipped in September 2005 and include the following Gateway notebook models: Gateway CX200, CX210, E100M, M250, M255, M280, M285, M465, M685, MP8708, NX260, NX510, NX560, NX860, NX100, MX1025, MX6918b and MX1020j.

Gateway said it will replace the batteries free of charge and has asked customers to either call its hotline at 800-292-6814 or visit its Web site for more information.

Sony will cover the replacement and incidental costs, Gateway said, while Gateway will absorb the administrative costs of dealing with the situation.

The CPSC said that 40,000 Fujitsu, 85,000 Sony and 210,000 Toshiba notebooks sold in the U.S. are also affected by the announcement.

Dell, Apple Computer, Lenovo and Sharp have also issued massive recalls for the faulty batteries shipped with their notebooks. In total, more than 8 million Sony notebook batteries worldwide have been recalled.

Technology seems made to stop working. Screens crack, circuits short, and power supplies abruptly conk out. It's all part of the complex and confounding ecosystem of electronics.

The worst, though, is when something really is built to break--and in the most extreme way. I'm talking fiery explosions, flying components, and acid-leaking compartments, all courtesy of bugs built right into ill-fated devices.

Sound far-fetched? Hey, we've seen some crazy stuff happen over the years. Some of it is astonishing; some of it is merely annoying. But all of it is extreme--and entirely too real.

We start with some good old-fashioned spontaneous combustion.

Combustible Computers

Nothing screams "tech disaster" like a laptop on fire. Due to the intricacies of modern-day electronics, it takes only a minor manufacturing error to send your system up in flames--and not the kind generated by the jerks of online forums, either.

The most extreme example of fire-related fallout may be the massive series of recalls brought about by bad Sony batteries such as Sony PCGA-BP1N battery, Sony PCGA-BP2NX battery, Sony PCGA-BP2NY battery, Sony PCGA-BP2R battery, Sony PCGA-BP2S battery, Sony PCGA-BP2T battery, Sony PCGA-BP2V battery and Sony PCGA-BP4V battery in 2006. Small shards of nickel made their way into the batteries' cells during production, causing numerous systems to overheat and sometimes catch fire. The recalls affected laptops sold by Dell, Hitachi, IBM, Lenovo, Toshiba, and even Apple.

By the end, a staggering 9.6 million laptop owners had been burned (figuratively speaking) by the failure, and Sony had spent nearly $430 million to replace all the defective units.

Lest you think I'm just blowing smoke up your ash, let me assure you that this danger was far from hypothetical. (Watch PC Pitstop simulate a laptop battery explosion where the temperatures soared to 1000 degrees.) A Sony-battery-powered laptop famously exploded and caught fire at the Los Angeles International Airport in 2007, and a traveler managed to catch the entire incident on tape.

Be warned: You will hear a few expletives shouted during some of the more dramatic moments. With a blast like that, I'd say they were warranted.

Fire risks have led to countless other laptop Sony laptop battery recalls over the years. Scientists are now working on developing a new material that could better protect the lithium ion technology and keep such short-circuiting from occurring.
